North Beach

Panoramic vistas and gorgeous historical architecture define this vibrant San Francisco region

Welcome to North Beach

San Francisco’s famously steep hills are epitomized in the posh district that makes up North Beach. They are three unique neighborhoods that each feature heart-stoppingly beautiful views of the city skyline.

The lively (and, yes, hilly streets) in this section of the city run the gamut from fabulously restored Victorians and Chateau-style masterpieces to striking Edwardians and opulent townhomes. Iconic landmarks abound in this region. There is the Coit Tower in Telegraph Hill and the “Crookedest Street in the World '' in Russian Hill. You will find the globally renowned bookstore City Lights in North Beach. A magnificent array of restaurants, bars, and boutiques amplifies the allure of this slice of San Francisco and explains why it’s one of the chicest places to visit, let alone to call home.

Local Lifestyle

Telegraph Hill, Russian Hill, and North Beach are perennially abuzz with youthful energy. Affluent professionals, prosperous singles, lively young families, and retirees who love to be near the action are all delighted by this area’s vibrancy and the tremendous amount of cultural activities and architectural wonders. While these neighborhoods are a broader part of California’s fourth largest city, they have a welcoming and quintessential small-town vibe.

Dining, Shopping & Entertainment

As a leading, internationally acclaimed destination, San Francisco’s culinary scene is for the record books. This region contributes to its prominence as a foodie’s paradise with a handful of outstanding restaurants and bars.

For a taste of old San Francisco, residents often flock to Original Joe’s, an intimate and elegant neighborhood treasure that specializes in delectable Italian dishes. Cioppino, chicken marsala, and spicy rigatoni are just a few of the selections you’ll find on their classic menu. Excellent Italian fare is also found at the luminous and lively Firenze By Night. Kick off your meal with Italian sausage-stuffed mushrooms, share a plate of cappellini with creamy basil, and conclude it all with traditional cannoli alla Siciliano.

Gino & Carlo is another wonderful institution, where neighbors and friends frequently convene to play a few rounds of pool and catch up over ice-cold Guinness drafts and Shock Top ales, while the district’s robust Italian ties are amply celebrated at Sotto Mare, a veritable hotspot that plates out sumptuous seafood like cold-cracked Dungeness crab, lobster ravioli bathed in tomato cream, and wild-caught scallops. Linger over a bottle of Sangiovese; the warm, welcoming energy of this venue will immediately make you feel at home.

Things to Do

This spirited, playful region has a glowing reputation for its festivals, parades, and community events. Every autumn, thousands of residents and visitors convene for the annual Columbus Day Parade, a colorful event that starts in Fisherman’s Wharf and concludes in North Beach

Each summer sees a stream of visitors to the area who come out for the North Beach Festival. It is a two-day street fair, now in its 67th year, that features everything from acrobatics to poetry on Grant Ave. The area is also famous for its above-mentioned Coit Tower, a structure that dates back nearly a century and boasts staggering, 360-degree views of the majestic city.
